This module is aimed at: Librarians and other information specialists who wish to master the required skills for creating and disseminating complete electronic documents and information system managers wishing to understand more about document preservation and the creation and dissemination of digital libraries.

Unit 1 - Conceptual overview
This unit introduces digital libraries and the legal environment within which they operate. Examples from different subject domains are used to demonstrate the use and main features of digital libraries. The unit also provides an overview of the legal issues related to the creation and management of digital material.

Unit 2 - Electronic documents and formats
This unit describes several of the different formats of electronic documents that can be included in a digital library. It provides a technical overview of the various formats, character encoding schemes and encoding scripts, document mark-up, and how to convert between the various formats.

Unit 3 - Metadata standards and subject indexing
This unit describes the role of metadata, metadata types, various standards and their application in organizing electronic documents, including the Dublin Core. The unit also introduces the principles and procedures of subject indexing for document retrieval.

Unit 4 - Creation and management of digital documents
This unit covers the workflow involved in the creation and management of electronic documents, including digitization, the creation and adaptation of documents for a digital library, issues related to delicate and heritage documents, and the preservation of digital material.

Unit 5 - Creation and sharing of digital libraries
This unit covers the processes and resources required for planning, implementing and managing a digital library project.

Unit 6 - Example of digital library software - Greenstone
This unit describes how to use the open source Greenstone Digital Library Software to build and provide access to digital library collections.

Moving Theory into Practice: Digital Imaging Tutorial
The Digital Imaging Tutorial offers base-level information on the use of digital imaging to convert and make accessible cultural heritage materials. It contains up-to-date technical information, formulas, and reality checks, designed to test your level of understanding. This tutorial is being provided by the Cornell University Library/Research Department, through the Mann Library, as a contribution to IMARK.

From Paper to Collection
This document explains how to create CD-ROM collections from paper documents. It describes in full detail the procedures and economics involved in the scanning and optical character recognition (OCR) processes, so that documents are in a suitable format for the Greenstone software (also provided on this CD). This document is being provided by UNESCO as a contribution to IMARK.

AGROVOC
AGROVOC is the multilingual thesaurus for indexing and retrieving data in agricultural information systems, specifically the international cooperative systems AGRIS (International Information System for the Agricultural Sciences and Technology) and CARIS (Current Agricultural Research Information System), managed by FAO. AGROVOC is being provided by FAO as a contribution to IMARK.

CAB Thesaurus
The CAB Thesaurus is a thesaurus of the applied life sciences. It is the world's largest thesaurus for agricultural sciences and related subjects. The CAB Thesaurus is being provided by CAB International as a contribution to IMARK.

Greenstone Digital Library Software (Version 2.51)
Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. This distribution includes everything you need to run Greenstone (including a pre-built demonstration collection) and to build new Greenstone collections. The Greenstone Digital Library Software (an open source product licensed by the University of Waikato) is being provided by UNESCO as a contribution to IMARK.

NAL Agricultural Thesaurus
The National Agricultural Library (NAL), US Dept of Agriculture (USDA), creates The NAL Agricultural Thesaurus. The thesaurus covers agriculture in its broadest sense, including allied disciplines in the biological, social, physical, and earth sciences. It is used for various indexing and retrieval applications throughout USDA, including NAL's AGRICOLA bibliographic database. The NAL Agricultural Thesaurus is being provided by the USDA National Agricultural Library as a contribution to IMARK.
